ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY Postdoctoral Dental Program Overview ACCREDITATION STATUS: This program is fully accredited by the Council of Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association The postdoctoral program in Dental Diagnostic Science was approved in 1979 and accepted the first student in 1980. The certificate program offers extensive training in radiation physics and radiation biology, radiographic techniques and interpretation and is designed to prepare students to sit for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology exam. Students will be responsible for performing, interpreting and updating conventional and advanced radiographic procedures such as CT, Cone Beam CT, and magnetic resonance images acquired in the graduate clinic or assigned in courses. Our graduate clinic includes three cone beam CT machines from three different manufacturers. In addition we have a steriolithography machine for modeling body parts and making surgical guides. Our report writing area is similar to that of a medical facility including voice converting dictation equipment and software. Students write reports of scans from across the country as captured on all brands of CBCT machines. A student who is planning for an academic career may extend his/her Certificate program for six months to obtain a Master of Science degree. Our research facilities include our owjn PhD physicist, laboratory and a designated technician as well as five Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists. A combined program of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Radiation Physics co-sponsored by the dental and medical schools is available for students with special interest in research training at the PhD level. Each student is required to conduct a research project. Certificate students participate in ongoing research and are encouraged to complete a project for journal publication. Master of Science students are required to complete a thesis following the regulations of the on campus graduate school of biomedical science. Tuition and ancillary school expenses are approximately $5,000 per year, and a stipend of between $10,000-18,000 per year is offered pending the availability of funds to support the training. All students are appointed as Teaching Assistants at the 50% level thereby affording them the opportunity to receive medical benefits at a lower cost as well as the ability to pay in-state tuition as opposed to out of state tuition rates. All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test and score more than 1000 combined on the analytical and quantitative sections. Students from countries where English is not the principal language are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applications are due November 1st of each year for the following year's matriculating class. For additional information please contact: Marcel E. THE CURRICULUM INCLUDES:
ADVANCED TRAINING IN FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY IS AVAILABLE & INCLUDES:
OUR EVIDENCE BASED LEARNING INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING OPPORTUNITIES: Students also learn to practice evidence-based oral health care through routine use of the internet. Students learn to exploit information technology to improve oral health through the use of personal computers, electronic databases, local networks, diagnostic support software, the Internet, and computer-based instruction. BOARD CERTIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL GRADUATES: Successful completion of the Certificate and MS Programs can fulfill the formal education requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the American Board of Forensic Odontology. APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants with dental degrees from the U.S.A and Canada are preferred. A minimum of one year’s experience in a general practice residency or in general practice is desirable. All other candidates will thoroughly be considered and are encouraged to apply. PRECEPTORSHIP PROGRAM IN ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY: This program is primarily for colleagues and graduated dentists from countries outside the USA and Canada who wish to learn Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology during a limited period of time, typically 12-18 months. Preceptors may audit any ongoing courses and seminars, carry out independent research and fully participate in the graduate clinical activities as described in the graduate program. Acceptance is dependent on applicant qualifications and ability to pay tuition and subsistence while in the program.
