Fellowships in Forensic Odontology

Purpose
This fellowship includes intensive and focused background, instruction, and experience designed to prepare dentists for involvement in Forensic Odontology.
Description
The fellowship offers a full range of instruction and experience in Forensic Odontology. Included topics are imaging principles and interpretation, dental identification of human remains, multiple fatality incident management for victim identification, bitemark analysis and interpretation, recognition and case management of victims of abuse (child, adult, elder), overview of forensic physical anthropology, and the principles and practical aspects of relating to the legal system. This Fellowship is designed for dentists who seek information and practical experience in forensic odontology that is more comprehensive than is feasible during the Southwest Symposium on Forensic Dentistry.
Administration
The program is directed by David R. Senn, DDS. and may include attendance of regularly scheduled lectures in courses given by the Department of Dental Diagnostic Science, which are relevant to Forensic Dentistry. David R. Senn, DDS, Director of C.E.R.F., the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office, and the Bexar County Forensic Science Center also provide support and the opportunity for practical experience.
Length of Program
220 hours (continuous or periodic but to be completed in a 14 month period)
Additional Requirements
Fellows must complete a research study or project. The results are to be presented orally to the Forensic Dentistry Committee at UTHSCSA and submitted for presentation at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), Odontology Section. If not accepted and presented at the AAFS annual meeting the results must be presented at another national or international forensic meeting.
Tuition
$7,750 (for 2009) plus travel, living expenses, supplies, and incidentals.
Credentials
"Certificate of Completion of Fellowship in Forensic Odontology" issued by the Department of Dental Diagnostic Science specifying the number of hours of instruction, and a "Certificate of Visit" from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and hour-for-hour CE credit. No academic credit is offered in this Fellowship. Upon successful completion of this fellowship a dentist will meet the education requirement for membership in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the education requirement for application to the American Board of Forensic Odontology.
