She also holds a B.S. with major in craniofacial development and biostatistics, a M.S. in oral biology and a Ph.D. in cancer biology obtained with honors at Paris 7 University, France. She completed three years post-doctoral research training in molecular biology at the UTHSCSA and joined the faculty in 2004. She has professional affiliations with the International Academy of Oral Oncology, the American and International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and she is an active member of the San Antonio Cancer Institute (SACI) in the Cancer Prevention and Population Science, and Experimental Pharmacology Programs. She has been actively engaged in research in public dental and oral health, with her work receiving several recognitions such as the 2002 International IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Award, the 2004 international IADR/Unilever Hatton Award, the 2006 Research Fellowship of Aspen Cancer Conferences, and the 2006 international IADR /John Clarkson Fellowship in Oral Health Research. She is currently conducting basic, translational and clinical research evaluating novel diagnostic and prognostic markers and treatment modalities for patients with oral, head and neck cancer. Her research has received Institutional support from the 2004 New Investigator Research Award of the UTHSCSA Executive Research Committee and the SACI, and she has several pending NIH and AACR applications. She has active collaborations with senior scientists in the field at the UTHSCSA (Medical Oncology, Pharmacology, Pathology, ENT, Surgery, Epidemiology and Biostatics) but also with world class Institutions such as the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medical School, University of Tokyo (Japan), University of Napoli (Italy), and University of Sheffield (UK). Dr. Papagerakis is currently one of the five outstanding Health Science Center early-career clinical investigators selected to join the South Texas Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development Program type K-12.
