W. Doss McDavid received his Ph.D. from UTHSCSA in 1976 and joined the Dental Diagnostic Science faculty in the following year. His responsibilities include teaching and research related to the physics of diagnostic imaging, particularly as it relates to dental radiography. In recognition for his work in dental radiography he was awarded the Doctor of Odontology honoris causa from Umea University in Sweden. He has served as a reviewer for Medical Physics and presently serves on the editorial board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontics. He is cross-appointed in the Department of Radiology and is an active participant in the Radiological Sciences graduate program. Dr. McDavid’s laboratory was the scene of some of the earliest research in dental digital radiography. With the assistance of a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Dr. McDavid and his co-workers developed the first digital panoramic x-ray device in America. The Dental Diagnostic Science imaging laboratory has also been deeply involved in the early tests of the clinical efficacy of the first intraoral digital x-ray devices. Basic research conducted here has provided important data on the performance of digital x-ray sensors and has led to the development of specifications for a new generation of intraoral detectors. Workers in the laboratory have patented a procedure for the storage and retrieval of digital dental radiographs and have developed a number of computer programs for imaging applications, which are available to researchers around the world.
